Rezum Prostate Procedure
Isn’t it time men were offered an easy treatment choice for an enlarged prostate?
Rezum water vapor therapy is a relatively simple, one-time, in-office procedure that provides lasting relief for men who suffer from an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

At the urology practice of Richard Natale, MD, we use Rezum™ water vapor therapy to treat men suffering from BPH symptoms.
Why a New BPH Treatment Is Necessary
An enlarged prostate, the source of many urinary problems, is extremely common. It is estimated that half of all men suffer from BPH by the age of 50 and by the age of 80, almost all men do.
The most common signs and symptoms of BPH are sleep disruptions due to frequent, strong urges to urinate, the sensation that you are unable to empty your bladder completely, and urinary dribble or leakage.
BPH medications are the traditional first-line treatment. The downside of these medications, however, is that it can take months to work, must be taken daily (which results in a continuing cost), becomes less effective over time, and comes with side effects that include impaired sexual function.
Surgery is the typical next step when patients no longer wish to proceed with BPH medications. This includes surgery to remove the enlarged prostate tissue, or to place implants that help hold back prostate tissue, thus opening the urethra. Side effects most often associated with BPH surgeries are erectile dysfunction and retrograde ejaculations, where semen ends up in the bladder instead of traveling out through the penis (a condition called “dry orgasm”).
How Water Vapor Therapy Works
This minimally invasive procedure to remove excess prostate tissue is conducted in your doctor’s office, under local anesthesia. Your urologist will use a special instrument inserted through the urethra. It quickly turns water into steam, and it’s this thermal energy that shrinks enlarged prostate tissue. The tissue is destroyed in mere seconds – and the process does so without harming healthy nearby tissue. During your body’s natural healing response to the procedure, the destroyed tissue is removed and eliminated, allowing the urethra to more fully open, and thus, eliminating your BPH symptoms.
Benefits of Water Vapor Therapy for BPH
Water vapor therapy is preferred over medications and traditional BPH surgeries for a number of reasons, including the following:
-
- It’s safe and effective
- It offers lasting relief of BPH symptoms
- It preserves sexual function
- It can improve BPH symptoms as quickly as 2 weeks after treatment
- It requires just a single in-office treatment and brief recovery period afterward
