Causes of Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease

Having a slight penile curvature is normal and is not a cause of concern. However, if you have a curved penis and you feel pain with an erection or even when you are flaccid, you might have a condition known as Peyronie’s disease.

This issue can interfere with romantic relationships due to the physical pain it can inflict on the man. Let’s talk about what Peyronie’s disease is, what causes it in the first place, and what you can do about it.

What Is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s disease is a noncancerous condition in which the penis has a curved shape. The penis may curve up or down, have an hourglass shape, or be indented.

The disorder becomes distinct when the penis is erect. Its symptoms may develop slowly or may appear to develop overnight. Some of its symptoms are the following:

  • Significant bend to the penis
  • Erection problems
  • Shortening of the penis
  • Pain
  • Penile deformities

What Causes Peyronie’s Disease?

Research about the cause of Peyronie’s disease is limited; however, doctors have identified some factors that could be involved in its development. Some of the known causes of this disorder are the following:

Injury to the Penis

Doctors believe this is the largest contributor to the development of this disease. Trauma to the penis may be a result of sexual intercourse, athletic activity, or an accident. During the healing process of the injury to the penis, scar tissue forms inside the organ. This scarring creates a pulling action, leading to the curvature of your penis.

Heredity

Doctors believe that men are more susceptible to developing this condition if one of their family members has it. This continues to be researched, but it requires men to divulge sensitive personal information, which is difficult to collect.

Age

There is a somewhat higher risk for men to develop Peyronie’s disease as they get older. This is likely due to the tissues in the penis losing their structural integrity due to expected natural age-related degeneration of cells. This may also cause scarring, leading to the development of Peyronie’s disease.
