Urologist
If you’re experiencing painful urination, urinary incontinence, and/or chronic urinary tract infection (UTI), and your primary care physician deems that you need specialized care, they will likely refer you to a urologist.
A urologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the entire range of conditions affecting the urinary and male reproductive tract.
As with your visit to any other medical specialist, you want to ensure your urological check-up goes smoothly and is worth your while. Listed below are a few tips to help you get the most out of your visit to your urologist.
Make a list of questions.
Write them down, so you can remember what you wanted to speak to the doctor about and to make sure all of your questions and concerns are addressed. Place your most important questions at the top of the list to make sure you get them answered.
Be open and honest.
Tell your doctor everything they need to know, particularly about your symptoms and how long they have been happening. This will help your doctor come up with an accurate diagnosis.
Additionally, it helps to make sure you tell your doctor about your medical history and that of your family as well as whether you have any comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.). Some urological conditions have genetic risk factors. This will help your doctor determine the necessity for frequent health screenings or monitoring and appropriate dietary and lifestyle recommendations.
Drink enough water prior to your appointment.
Your urologist will likely need a urine sample. Try to wait until you arrive at the office, so you can provide them with a sample. If you’re unable to hold your urge to urinate, inform your doctor or their staff.
Try to relax.
Sensitive topics can cause anxiety, which can cause you to forget what the urologist says to you. Consider bringing a family member or someone you trust with you for support and to help you take note of what your doctor said during your appointment.
