Men's Health
Bladder infections (cystitis) are a type of urinary tract infection (UTI). Symptoms would include frequent and painful urination, a fever, and cloudy urine, which may sometimes have blood. While these symptoms are more common in women, men can also experience them.
Because mild forms of cystitis can go away without medical treatment, some people tend to skip a visit to the doctor. Here are reasons why it is essential to seek out your urologist after all.
Causes of a Bladder Infection
With bladder infections, the culprit is often Escherichia coli or E. coli. This bacterium often presents itself in the large intestines and stool. It attaches itself to the bladder and can multiply rapidly. Because the body cannot fight it off quickly enough, it results in a bladder infection.
Moreover, certain conditions can make a person more susceptible to bladder infections. In men, cystitis can occur as a complication of an enlarged prostate or kidney stones. These conditions may block the passage of urine in which bacteria can grow, thus increase your risk of developing a bladder infection.
Other illnesses can also lead to cystitis, like acute bacterial prostatitis. This disease is an acute infection that takes place in the prostate. Untreated, the infection can get worse and cause more serious problems.
Thus, although women get UTIs more often, bladder infections in men can be more severe and complicated. Schedule an appointment with your urologist when you experience symptoms of cystitis because this type of infection can result in a kidney infection if left untreated.
Treating Bladder Infections
You may have read that drinking cranberry juice can either prevent or cure UTIs. However, there is no definitive proof that supports this claim. Though the drink may aid slightly in stopping bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall, it does little for infections. It’s also acidic and may cause an upset stomach in those who already have stomach acid problems.
If you are showing signs of a bladder infection, it’s in your best interest to consult your urologist. The common approach to treating the condition is through antibiotics, which requires your doctor’s prescription.
When taking antibiotics, remember to follow your physician’s orders exactly. The body can become used to antibiotics. Over time, the infection may adapt and become more resistant. Also, patients must follow prescriptions even when symptoms disappear as the bladder infection may return after.
Your urologist can also recommend drinking a lot of fluids to flush out bladder irritants. Likewise, they will inform you of how you can prevent another infection from occurring.
